What does fair travel mean?

  • Respect for other cultures
  • Relationships based on partnership
  • Ecological compatibility
  • Participation of the local population
  • Respect for Human Rights

Tourism can contribute to a sustainable development. In that case, sustainability is primarily a way of thinking and acting. This is why Bread for the World – Tourism Watch and its partners in the Global South are committed to promote a fair and cooperative tourism from which tourists and hosts benefit equally. The focus of the journey lies on the appreciation of the "other" which means: concern and respect for  belief systems, customs, traditions and social etiquettes.

The contact between tourists and locals can be a life-enriching exchange of experiences for both sides. Since travellers are guests, they best behave in a tolerant, open and respectful way towards foreign cultures and living spaces.

"Those who visit others should open their eyes, not their mouth."
Tanzanian saying

Sometimes it is better not to have ready-made answers, but to ask questions and be interested. Scrutinise your own opinions and attitudes, critically question stereotypes, prejudices and facts that are usually taken for granted. See for yourself how things are by thoroughly observing them.

Before you start your journey, ask yourself:

  • What do I look forward to on this trip? What do I willingly leave behind?

  • Who is pleased with my travel? At home? In the country I go to?

  • Do I want to learn something on this journey? What do I want to learn?

  • Which persons do I want to get to know? What do I already know about them? What do they know about me? What do I expect from them?

  • Who benefits from my journey? To whom might it do harm?

  • What will I bring on this journey and what do I want to take home? What kinds of thoughts, presents or souvenirs?

  • Could I involuntarily hurt somebody in the country I go to? By means of a tip that I give, or my presents, or my words, or my habits, appearance or photographs?

  • How do people see me? In their eyes, am I an "intruder", somebody who brings money from abroad, or a guest from a different world?

  • How do I feel as a stranger in another culture?

  • How much time will I spend in cities and how much in the countryside?

  • Is there time for unexpected encounters and conversations? How much time do I have for myself? How much time do I want to take, to really get to know the country and its inhabitants?

  • Do I look forward to going back home? Why (not)? To what/whom do I look forward to (or not)?
